Still toddlers, still trees…

I know this blog hasn’t been the most updated… kind of cuts me to have it be that way.  But  in an attempt to maintain two blogs, and raise two children, and have a full time job, and change countries and buy house and who knows what else, I found that well, I didn’t really excel at the first two (and hopefully got a passable grade on the rest).  But we still have one toddler, and still get plenty of trees.Toddlers in the Trees-1

Part of me thinks I should call a spade a spade and just shut the blogs down but I can’t seem to do it.  I can’t even log into our instagram for this account anymore, and I’m much less on social media given schedules.  But even still, there are still so many wonderful people who reach out with questions about outdoor education and or about raising little ones in Denmark… and those who told me that they’ve tried forest schools or outdoor preschools, or just even made the effort to be outside more.  And those who were inspired to teach or inspired to learn…I love those stories, and we must get a few of them every week still.  I love thinking that there are other individuals who are thinking just a little bit differently about what we give our kids today, and how it can be better.

And truth be told, this little space on the internet is a special one for me.  I am still extremely sentimental, and extremely grateful, for the experience that we had as a result of forest schools that I feel that shutting this down would somehow close that chapter.  And while my daughter, our eldest and our pioneer forest schooler is now 7, that still feels too soon for me.

So I’ll continue to think on it and I hope that you’ll continue to drop by and keep us posted with your own stories.

Home…sick…

Somehow two weeks came and went – first we were off enjoying some summertime in North Dakota, and then coming back took a little more energy than expected.  So much so that it culminated in catching up with toddler in the form of a fever.  So yesterday we declared a “r’n’r” day – our tot stayed home to recuperate and catch up on sleep to beat the jet lag.  We also did a few feel good things that you do on sick days, like play cards and make pudding.  And watch movies…

Home, a movie for foreign service and diplomatic and third culture kids.

Someone had recommended “Home” to us, and I have to say it was rather cute.  Unfortunately, it’s totally predictable (though not to a four-year old), but Jim Parsons does a sweet job voicing the main character. It’s not necessarily the best animated option out there in terms of plot, but maybe we also liked it since it captures the feeling of being different and not  always fitting in.  When you live abroad in many places, that’s something you can identify with and now that my daughter is getting older, she’s starting to catch on.  Ironically, this feeling will probably hit her most when we actually go home, since what feels like home for her and what is actually home for us are two different things.

But plot notes aside, on this particular day, Home was just what the doctored ordered, in more ways than one…

A few new things on the blog!

Happy Monday everyone! A couple of weeks ago, we put in place a few updates to the blog that hopefully make things a little easier for you as a reader.  As always, many thanks to Carolina from Light Morango – it’s her awesome template that makes this blog run and she was kind enough to help me out with a few technical things behind the scenes.  In addition to her help, I finally got a few other things up and running as well that had been on our to-do list.  As a quick intro, here’s what’s changed:

1.  New Header

A bit of fresh foliage for spring, what do you think? We had the watercolor pinecones before, but with so much sunshine these days, we thought we’d freshen things up.

2. Category Grids

This is probably the nerd in me, but check out the categories on the right and see now nice the pages look when you click on them.  No more incessant scrolling through category posts (though you’ll still scroll if you click on a tag or use search)  – so if you’re interested in a particular main section, say our thoughts about forest school based on experiences or looking for things to do out and about in Copenhagen or Denmark, you’ll see all of the posts with a thumbnail in grid format.  Pretty cool, am I right?

3.  Pinterest

We’re on it – finally! The favicon has always been up but we finally got our Pinterest page squared away.  You’ll see some of the key images from here of course, but also inspiration from other forest schools, getting outside, the great woods of the world and other interests for toddlers and little ones.  The Pin It function was updated to work a little more smoothly (it even pins over the description so you don’t have to type it!)  so pin, pin, pin away! And of course, follow along on Pinterest for more pinspiration (yes, pun intended.)

4. Instagram in the Footer

The blog is the main home for our thoughts and experiences with the Danish forest school, but the Instagram account is where we post little daily updates of what’s been going on and what the kids are up to.  We’d love it if you follow along on that account as well, but for those that just want a quick recap, the images feed into the bottom of the blog as well.

5.  An updated Facebook Page

Since we updated the blog header, it only made sense to refresh the Facebook page as well.  We also share little updates here, as well as articles and useful info from other like-minded sources about forest school, education, and fun stuff for kids.  It’s also where we chit-chat and answer any immediate questions – hop over and check it out!

A Toddler in the Trees is a personal blog that tells the story of our toddler in the forest school children's education system and other adventures in parenting in Denmark.

And a big thank you to you, the readers, for making this little blog grow so quickly.  We appreciate the time you take to check in with us.  If you’d every like to see anything specific or more of anything here in this space, don’t be shy and use one of the above to let us know! Thanks for reading and great to have you join us!

Stars and Stripes…

It’s a classic American holiday and we’ll be celebrating it in a classic American style – with a Danish twist! Beach days, barbecues and good friends, as well as a little adventure, are on tap this three-day weekend – wishing you a happy 4th!
